Hydrocarbons in cosmetics
Similar compounds, which are used in cosmetology and pharmacology, are the products of oil refining. Most often on the labels of cosmetics they are designated by the word "Petrolatum".
The popularity of hydrocarbons among cosmetics manufacturers is explained by low price, availability, good reaction with waxes and fats, and also the ability to be stored for a long time without losing its properties. As part of the cosmetic product, hydrocarbons create a protective film that softens the skin, and also provides a good sliding effect in massage and baby creams. The disadvantages of hydrocarbons include high kaminonogennuyu activity, the ability to increase the sensitivity of the skin to ultraviolet and provoke inflammatory phenomena.
For this reason, owners of oily skin prone to inflammatory processes, as well as dry sensitive skin, should not use cosmetics containing hydrocarbons, since the film they create inhibits the regeneration of the epidermis.
Vaseline may be yellow or white in color. It is widely used in cosmetology and pharmaceutics, especially Russian, for ointments of surface effect, since it has the property not to penetrate the skin barrier.
Vaseline oil( liquid paraffin) is obtained from oil residues after kerosene distillation has occurred. It is also not used alone and is used to make creams and ointments. It is a colorless, oily liquid, odorless and tasteless, which mixes with all but castor oils.
Mineral oil is a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons obtained during the distillation of oil. It is usually used in protective creams, as it prevents moisture loss by the tissues, creating a water-repellent film on the skin. Delays not only moisture, but also toxins, carbon dioxide, waste products, which are excreted through the skin. In addition, it prevents the penetration of oxygen into the cells.
Ozokerite is a natural substance, also known as mountain wax, which is a mixture of paraffin carbonaceous minerals, mineral salts and oils. It is used as an additive in various creams. Also in cosmetology is widely used ceresin - purified ozocerite.
Paraffin is used as a base of creams. It is not used alone, but only in combination with ozocerite or wax.
Propylene glycol is a derivative of mineral oil. It is present in creams, moisturizers, attracts and binds water. It is believed that it gives the skin a youthful look. Cheaper than glycerin, but causes more allergic reactions and irritation, contributes to the formation of acne. In industry, it is used as antifreeze in water cooling systems and as
brake fluid.
Squalene is one of the essential components of sebum( the natural secretion of sebaceous glands). It is obtained from the liver of sharks, olive oil and wheat germ oil. For cosmetic purposes it is used to protect, detoxify, moisturize, soften and nourish the skin. Also used in cleansing creams, lipsticks, oils for massage.

The basis of cosmetics often include waxes: bees, candelilla, carnauba, jojoba, etc. The main task of such substances is to provide the necessary density and thermostability of the drug. If there is wax in the list of ingredients of the cream, this circumstance indicates that this is a preparation for dry skin. In the cosmetic industry waxes of animal and vegetable origin are used.
Animal waxes Cryolane is a derivative of lanolin and is obtained by its crystallization. It mixes well with mineral and vegetable oils, easily retains water and dissolves biologically active substances and antiseptics. It is a part of face creams and children's preparations, as it removes irritation and improves the metabolism in the skin.
Beeswax is considered a cosmetic component with therapeutic effect, as in its composition there are substances related to the ingredients of the skin fat of a person. It is obtained by re-heating the honeycomb cells released from honey
.This wax creates a film on the skin that prevents dehydration.
Terran is a hard lanolin that is produced simultaneously with cryolane. It is a wax-like substance and is used to ensure the stability of emulsions.
Vegetable wax
Carnauba wax is obtained from the leaves of a palm tree growing in the jungle of the Amazon River. Has excellent polishing ability and well retains moisture in the stratum corneum of the epidermis, forms a protective film on the surface of the skin. It is part of nighttime nourishing creams, increases the stability of decorative cosmetics.
Candelilla wax
is obtained during processing of cacti growing in Mexico or the USA.Usually in cosmetic preparations the share of this substance can reach up to 13%.By its properties and effect is close to Car-Naub wax. It imparts plasticity and opacity to cosmetic preparations.
Jojoba oil is a liquid wax. It forms a film on the surface of the skin, softens and moisturizes it. Used as a conditioner for hair. Especially recommended for the restoration of damaged hair. It is also present in the lips.
Spermaceti - this substance also has a natural origin: it is contained in a special spermaceous tank - an organ located in the skull of a sperm whale. The main component of spermacet( cetyl palmitate) has wound healing, softening, anti-inflammatory and cooling effects. Usually used in creams.
