Useful and medicinal properties of poppy-dormant
An annual plant with a spindle-shaped root, erect stalk up to 1 m in height, seated with the next incised-lobed gray leaves;flowers single, large, 8-12 cm wide, with a double-leaved cup and a corolla of 4 pale-violet or pink petals with dark spots at the base, with numerous stamens and a short pestle with a sessile multiparous stigma;the fetus is broadly ovate, up to 7 cm long and 2-3 cm wide, the capsule opening under the apical disc, the seeds are numerous, small, bluish-black. Blossoms in June-July.
The whole plant contains alkaloids, the main of which is morphine;as well as codeine, papaverine, thebaine, etc.
The medicinal value of the hypnotic poppy is due to the presence in its milky juice of valuable alkaloids( opium), often used as painkillers, soothing and hypnotics.
Opium is a milky juice flowing from an incised green box( called "
koy head"), which quickly dries up and turns into a thick brownish-brown mass.
To use opium is recommended only for the doctor's prescription!
In folk medicine, not only the milky juice of poppy is used, but also its flowers and seeds.
The greatest attention is paid to flowers, which are better for medicinal purposes from wild poppy and poppy-seed( see Mak-samoseyka and Mack oriental).Dry the petals in the shade, laying them a thin layer, so they do not turn black.
Fresh juice from poppy heads is used by people from insect bites, decoction of immature bunches is used to sing children to sleep well, with insomnia, poultices from heads, and also from leaves - as an external analgesic. If the seeds are grinded and diluted with water, a white, milk-like liquid is obtained, which is called poppy milk;it is consumed internally in large doses( half a glass 3-4 times a day) with hemorrhoids and a heavy inflammation of the lungs. Grated seeds are mixed with honey and eat with liver diseases. Poppy seeds are part of the anthelmintic.
Dry petals of poppy flowers, powdered, are consumed in diseases of the stomach( especially with catarrhs) in the form of a simple decoction, and petals, powdered and boiled in milk or honey, or as a tincture on vodka - from insomnia, withmental overwork.

Application of
Decoction of flowers: 1) on water or on milk - 10 g per 200 ml;1 tbsp.spoon 3 times a day, and for insomnia - half an hour before bedtime;2) on honey: dilute 1-2 teaspoons of honey in a glass of water, in this solution boil for 5-10 minutes
2 tsp powder from the petals of poppy flowers and consume 1 tsp 3 times a day.
Tincture on vodka 10%: 15 drops 3 times a day, with insomnia - half an hour before bedtime.
Powder: 1 pinch( i.e., about 3 g) powder 3 times daily before meals.
