( Thistle)

Biennial prickly herbaceous plant. Stem erect, branching in upper part, up to 2 m high. Leaves prickly, serrate;radicals narrowed into petiole, remaining sessile, oblong, flowers in baskets, with water-lily screwdriver. Baskets mostly single or several at the tops of the stem and branches. Flowers are light purple, tubular, collected in a large inflorescence - a basket about 5 cm wide. Fruit is a seed with a crest, twice as large as a seed. Blooms from June to September.

It grows on damp meadows, along river banks, in roadside ditches, in weedy places in southern regions, in the Caucasus, in the Baltic, Central Asia.

Medicinal raw materials are flower baskets, leafy shoots, leaves without spines, collected during flowering, less often roots. The plant has a bitter taste. Raw materials contain fatty oil, alkaloids.

Experimental studies have established that tartar preparations are low in toxicity and do not cause side effects with prolonged use. In small doses they excite, and in large doses they depress the central nervous system. The drugs have a cardiotonic effect, increase the strength of the heartbeat, narrow the peripheral vessels, increase blood pressure. In addition, they increase the tone of smooth muscles, have hemostatic and some bactericidal action.

The thorny thorny( aerial part during the flowering period) is officially used as a bactericidal, hemostatic, cardiotonic, in the form of decoction - for the treatment of malignant tumors, in the treatment of tetanus and purulent wounds.

Another species of this plant - Tartar Crimean - has a very active antibiotic effect. Decoction of the roots of this plant is used not without success in Russian folk medicine in the treatment of uterine cancer.

Application of

Decoction of leaves( spines removed): 20 g per 200 ml;1 tbsp.spoon 3 times a day, with diseases of the bladder - 1 glass. Decoction of leaves is sometimes and externally applied.

Powder from leaves( without spines): 1 teaspoon 3 times a day( with water).

Infusion of leaves: 1 tbsp. Spoon the leaves with a glass of boiling water, 4 hours insist. Take 1/2 cup 3 times a day.

Infusion drink with angina, inflammation of the larynx, powder from the leaves sprinkled with wounds.
