Useful and therapeutic properties of belladonna, or belladonna( sleepy oduri)
Perennial herbaceous plant up to 1.5 m tall. Rhizome multi-headed with large branched roots. Stems one or more;stems erect, branched, come out of the rhizome. Leaves alternate, broadly lanceolate, pointed, entire, with a length of up to 20 cm or more. Flowers single, sometimes paired, on short pedicels in axils of leaves, dirty-purple. Fruit is a violet-black shiny berry. Blossoms in July-August.
Medicinal raw materials are grass and roots. The grass is collected during flowering and at the beginning of fruiting, dried immediately after collection in the air in the shade or under a canopy, on cloudy days - in dryers at a temperature of 30-40 degrees, gradually increasing it to 60 degrees. Roots are collected from plants no younger than two years of age in autumn. Shelf life - 2 years with observance of the rules for storage of poisonous plants.
The plant contains atropine, which is accompanied by other alkaloids - gloscyamine, scopolamine, apoatropin, belladonna. All the listed active principles are the poisons of the nervous system.
The belladonna alkaloids have the ability to regulate the tone and peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary and urinary tracts, dilate the bronchi, dilate the pupil and increase intraocular pressure, greatly inhibit the secretion of the glandular apparatus, enhance and increase the activity of the heart.
The belladonna is used for bronchial asthma, gastric and renal stone disease, hyperacid gastritis
max, peptic ulcer and spastic conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, in the treatment of patients with Parkinsonism, in autonomic dystonia and vasoneurosis. Preparations of belladonna can be used for poisoning with fungi or morphine - 20 drops of tincture at one time.
Due to the rich content of atropine, belladonna is widely used in homeopathy as an anti-spasmolytic and analgesic agent: with peptic ulcer and duodenal ulcers, with muscular, articular and neuralgic pains, with purulent bronchitis, to reduce debilitating sweats in pulmonary tuberculosis, with convulsivecough, epilepsy and hernia. Apply belladonna with bradycardia( slowing of cardiac activity).Prefer to use for treatment of fresh juice, and if you use extracts, then only from fresh grass.
Atropine is widely used for eye treatment, but it is contraindicated in glaucoma( eye disease with increased intraocular pressure). Before the arrival of a doctor, people use belladonna in the form of powder and fresh juice, which is acceptable at home under strict dosage.
