Perennial herbaceous plant reaching a height of 2 m. The root is massive, fusiform, outside yellow-brown, inside white. When cut in fresh condition gives yellowish resinous juice. Stem naked, round, branched at the top, inside empty( hence the name dudochnik).The leaves are shiny, pinnate or bipedate, to the touch cool, due to the essential oil contained in them, with large back-ovate, wedge-shaped, serrated segments. The flowers are collected in a complex umbrella( as in dill).The petals of the flowers are light yellow, roundish, with a curved tip. Fruits are double-seeded. The taste of the roots is spicy. The whole plant has a specific smell, reminiscent of the scent of celery. Blossom lovage in June-July, the seeds ripen in September.
Grow it in gardens in the southern and south-western regions of European Russia. It occurs in a solitary form. Well tolerates winter and in more northern areas of the middle belt, up to the latitude of Moscow.
With a therapeutic purpose, use the root, grass and fruits. The root of two-three-year-old plants is mainly used.
In folk medicine, lovage is used primarily as a diuretic, cardiac, expectorant, cleansing, analgesic. It is widely used in hydrocephalus, hysteria, nervous diseases, heart diseases, as an expectorant for lung diseases, bronchitis, stomach and gut pain( as regulating and
carminative agent), with difficult births, female diseases, as an anthelmintic and diaphoreticanemia, fever.
Tea from the root improves the functional activity of the gastrointestinal tract and reduces flatulence.
Outwardly, decoction of the root is used for hair growth and when it falls out, and its leaves, especially a little crumpled, when applied to the forehead, relieve the headache of any origin.
Application of
Root broth: 15 g per 200 ml;1 tbsp.spoon 3 times a day or as a tea( 5 g per 0.5 l of boiling water - daily dose).The broth has a beneficial effect on the unclean skin, it is good to add it to the bath( 40-60 g for 4-6 l of water per bath).
Infusion: 3 g per 250 ml - 3 times a day( daily dose).Powder: 1 g 3 times a day.
Broth of fruits and leaves: 4 g per 150 ml( 1 teaspoon per incomplete glass of boiling water) - 1 tbsp.spoon 3 times a day.
