Cutting out of fabric and stitching out of shreds of blocks is the most labor-intensive process in the whole process of working on a product in patchwork technique. But templates will help you in this.
A pattern is a pattern of a flap made of cardboard or plastic. They can be purchased at the handicraft shops of your city or made independently. To do this, you need to draw it without making allowances for seams. After that, draw from all sides the allowance of 5 mm, drawing a second contour. Cut out the resulting shapes and get two part blanks. The inner contour will clearly correspond to the size of the part in the finished product, it is the sewing line. The outer contour is the line of the cut of the fabric along with the allowances for the seams.
Especially for beginners, who begin to learn techniques and patchwork designs for beginners, we add a selection of templates and examples of their application in practice.
But for the first time do not handle the complex technical projects - circular patterns, patterns with rounded edges. For beginners, it will be easiest to use the simplest figures - a square and a triangle.
Rules for cutting
Before starting to cut the fabric into rags, remember the following rules:
- Before you start to cut, the fabric needs to be washed thoroughly and stripped off with an iron. This is done so that the new fabric does not change color after washing and to prevent shrinkage that may occur.
- To give the fabric stiffness, cotton fabric is starch, and silk is gelatin. After that, working with them will be much more convenient.
- On the fabric we draw with a pencil, soap or chalk on the wrong side. In no case do we use a ballpoint pen, as traces of the finished product will not be removed.
- Cutting is performed in the direction of the share thread. This is done so that the elements do not warp while stitching. When cutting a new fabric, pay attention to its edge.
Cut out the element by first applying the pattern with the allowances and tracing it, and then on top of the template without them and circle again. After all the sewing elements are ready, you can sew them according to the chosen scheme.
Patterns for patchwork
You can draw the layout of the flaps for future work yourself, but it will be easier for beginners to use ready-made patchwork schemes:
Master-class of sewing from squares
This technique is used for sewing small mosaic of squares, and the same square blocks of the product inthe whole canvas. The skills of this method can be worked out by creating a two-color cloth from squares of two colors, arranged in staggered order.
From the fabric we cut out squares with a side of 15.5 cm of two different colors. For the seam we leave the allowance 1 cm.
. In a checkerboard pattern, lay out the squares of the cloth on the table, mark the left with pins. This detail is not very important now, however, it will help you not to get confused when making a product with a lot of details. We break the future seams with tailor's pins instead of sweeping.
Alternating the stitch direction( from top to bottom and from bottom to top), we sew the squares horizontally. If the line is left unchanged, a shift will occur. Sew all the pleased squares.
Sutures are ironed, smoothing the allowances in different directions.
Before stitching the rows again, they are punctured with pins perpendicular to the future seam. A line can be laid directly on these pins.
If everything is done correctly, the corners will coincide, and you will get a smooth quality sheet.
