    Description. The name of these beautiful flowers is due, most likely, to the soft velvety ebb of the red-brown petals and the deep coloring of the flowers. Herbaceous, an annual plant 20-40 cm high, strongly branched, compact. The root system is well developed. Inflorescences are simple or double-dense baskets 5-12 cm in diameter, various bright juicy tones: monochromatic( yellow and orange), often two-colored with reddish-brown and burgundy spots and strokes on a yellow and orange background, also different in shape and terry. Flowers have a strong peculiar smell. The height of bushes of marigolds depends on the species and plant variety. This common elegant and beloved summer appears on the flower beds in late May and blossoms continuously until the snow. Flowering is constant, abundant and very long. Marigolds are very good predecessors for gladioli, astr, tulips and other crops, since they have the ability to disinfect the soil.

    Low-grown varieties are magnificent in curbs, arrays, carpet flower beds. Medium- and undersized - a beautiful decoration of balconies and windows. Plants with long peduncles are grown for cutting.

    Thanks to a very long flowering, marigolds can make both summer and autumn floral compositions in warm yellow-orange tones. You can make an ensemble of some marigolds taking into account their height.

    Cultivation and care. Marigolds are unpretentious to growing conditions of a plant. This is particularly true of the marigolds rejected, which grow in almost all the streets of cities, suffering a poor soil condition and smog. Marigolds upright are somewhat more demanding. Marigolds are fast-growing, heat-loving, drought-resistant and unpretentious plants, they are afraid only of frost. Prefer open spaces, but can develop well and abundantly bloom with a slight shading. These flowers are best planted on fertile neutral loam soils, which are sufficiently provided with moisture in the first half of summer. Marigolds erect prefer sunny areas.

    Marigolds also thankfully react to good care, rapidly growing and giving abundant and long flowering, therefore on poor soils regular fertilizing of plants is recommended, at least 2 times during the vegetation period.

    Propagate marigolds seedlings and sow seeds in open ground. Seeds are sown in the greenhouse at the beginning of April, picking is performed not by

    Types of marigolds

    Three main types of marigolds are widely spread in culture.

    Marigolds rejected - strongly branched plants forming a bush of dense structure, spreading or compact form. Leaves opposite or alternate, pinnately-dissected, dark or light green. Inflorescences - baskets 4-6 cm in diameter, simple, semi-double or double. Coloring light or bright yellow, red-brown, and also two-color yellow-brown. The height of the plants is classified as one of 4 groups:

    high - 50-60 cm;

    medium - 40-50 cm-,

    low - 25-40 cm;

    very low( Liliput) - 15-25 cm.

    All parts of plants have a strong odor.

    Straight standing marigolds - are strongly branched plants of the pyramidal form, forming a powerful shrub in height from 45 to 100 cm. The leaves are not fossilized, the root system is well developed. Inflorescences large elegant, 5-10 cm in diameter, monochromatic from light yellow to dark orange, terry, semi-double or simple. In terry inflorescences, the number of rows of reed flowers has been increased or the corolla of tubular flowers has grown. Varieties of marigolds erect are grouped in groups according to the height of plants:

    giant - above 90 cm;

    high - 60-90 cm;

    low - 45 cm

    Marigolds narrow-leafed, or thin leaf, - strongly branched compact dense globular plants, 15-25 cm high. Leaves pinnately divided, elegant, root system developed. Inflorescence-basket - the smallest of the species represented, consists of 1 row of ligulate flowers and a tubular disc. Inflorescences simple one- or two-color, yellow, orange, 1.5 cm in diameter. Flowering is abundant, the flowers are distinguished by a delicate aroma. This species is appreciated for its elegant appearance due to the openwork foliage.

    Seedlings are planted in the open ground in early June. The seeding depth is 1.5-3 cm. The sowing is carried out in the open ground at the end of May, the shoots appear after 8-12 days. They need to be thinned out. Extra seedlings are used as seedlings. High varieties plant at a distance of 25-35, averages 15-20, low - 10-15 cm from each other. During the vegetation period, plantings are watered, fed 1-2 times with full mineral fertilizer( fresh manure is better not to be used, as this has a negative effect on flowering), weeds are weeded, and the soil is loosened. Top dressing is especially necessary on poor soils( 20-30 g per 10 liters of water full of mineral fertilizer or organic fertilizer - 1 liter of Mullein infusion per 10 liters of water).Moderate watering is necessary when the soil is dry. Seeds are harvested when the inflorescence completely withers. Yellowed and dried up inflorescences are torn off, and before the onset of frost, plants are cut or mowed. Mature seeds are easily poured from the baskets and well threshed.

    Diseases and pests. The great value of marigolds is resistance to pests and diseases. The phytoncides released by the leaves repel insects, including soils. And yet, sometimes there are black legs, gray rot, root rot and stem root caused by fungi, bacterial and nematode diseases.
