Why are the days of the week so called?
Have you ever wondered why so are the days of the week? Where did these, and not any other names, come from? What influenced their appearance?
Before you understand why the days of the week are so called, you first need to understand that in the Old Slavonic language( and for many Slavic peoples - and to this day) the word "week" had a different meaning from modern. So called the last day of the week( analogue of the modern week), the weekend, when nothing "did".Hence, in fact, his name is "week".
Monday .As the first day of the week, Monday retains in its name the Old Slavonic meaning of the "week".This is the day after the week( Sunday) - on-week.
Tuesday .In the title of Tuesday, the word "second" is already clearly visible, which is quite logical. The second day of the week or the second day after the week - both values are equal and correct.
Wednesday .The name of the environment comes from the word "middle".Despite the seeming absurdity - after all, the "average" day of the week is the fourth, not the third, an explanation for this. The thing is that according to religious customs, Sunday is the first day of the week( in many countries this tradition has been preserved to this day, remember at least America and England). And although international standards are designated by the first day of the week Monday, the title of the third day of the week has preserved a biblical imprint. Thus, the environment is really obtained "in the middle" of the week.
Thursday and Friday .Again, everything is clear - the name came from the word "four", the fourth day of the week. The same goes for Friday, the name of which came from the word "five".
Saturday .The name of the Sabbath day came from the Hebrew word "Sabbath"( "shabbat" - "rest", "rest from work").And indeed, the Jewish religion has always considered a Sabbath as a day of rest.
Sunday .It is not difficult to guess that the name of the seventh day of the week is connected with the great event - the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is why with the introduction of Christianity the Old Russian name of the last day of the week was changed to "Sunday".And the word "week" has since been used only in a new meaning, replacing the old Russian week.
As you can see, the answer to the question, why so named days of the week, did not do without resorting to religious sources. Indeed, 3 of the 7 days of the week found their name due to certain events, the transition of Slavic peoples from paganism to Christianity.
