Pests of potatoes
Colorado beetle - elytra yellow with 10 black longitudinal stripes, a black triangular spot on the head. Female lay eggs on the underside of potato leaves. Eggs oblong-oval, yellow-orange. Larvae convex, covered with sparse hairs;first-third ages - brownish-red;the fourth - pink-orange. Larvae of the fourth generation pupate in the ground at a depth of 12-15 cm. Pupae are yellow-orange.
Control measures. Manual collection in dishes with a saturated solution of table salt. The best time for chemical treatment is the time of appearance of a mass number of larvae of the second and third age. Very effective treatment with sonnet drugs( 1 ampoule - 2 ml per 10 liters of water) or the commander( 1 ml per 10 liters of water). The consumption of the solution is 100 m2.
Potato nematode is a round worm, the larvae of which damage the roots and potato tubers. During flowering and later on the roots of affected plants, cysts similar to poppy seeds can be found. Each cyst contains between 200 and 1000 eggs with larvae. The viability of cysts in the soil persists to 10 years or more. Affected plants strongly lag behind in growth and development, the lower leaves die, the rest wither and turn yellow.
Control measures. Compliance with quarantine and preventive measures - do not use seed, soil tillage tools. On infected areas, cereals, legumes or vegetables should be cultivated for 3-4 years, and then grow nematode-resistant varieties of potatoes.Wireworm - this is the larva of the click beetles. Adult pests have an elongated body and a small head. If you put them on your back, they bounce, issuing a characteristic sound-click Eggs are white. The larvae are yellow. The larvae bite the roots and damage the potato tubers, doing the moves in them. Control measures. Permanently remove weeds, especially wheat grass. On the site you can lay baits in the form of small piles of grass, where pests are taken, then destroy them. It is recommended to use the drug basidin.
Medvedka - length up to 5 cm, brown with shortened elytra. On the front legs has strong teeth, adapted for digging the soil. At a depth of 10-15 cm, the bear arranges a nest where she lays a large number of white eggs 2-2.5 mm long. Larvae are externally similar to adult insects, but without wings. The bear is more often found in damp places, where much manure is applied. It damages potatoes and other vegetable crops, laying at the surface of the ground passages and gnawing roots and stems, eats tubers, root crops and seeded seeds. It hibernates in soil or manure.
Control measures. In autumn it is necessary to dig a site to a depth of up to 25 cm. You can decompose manure dung-bait. In the spring they are examined and the pests assembled there are destroyed. The most effective bait is a granulated medvex.
