Repaired large-fruited strawberry
Repaired large-fruited strawberries, as well as one-time fruit-bearing strawberries, belong to the same cultural species - pineapple( F. ananasa). The main differences are only in that the repair varieties bear fruit continuously or wavy for a long time - from the end of June and almost to the middle of autumn( up to 4 months).A long period of flowering and fruiting is due to the nature of the formation and growth of shoots( horns) and inflorescences. The necessary conditions for the formation of flower buds in remanent strawberries are the presence of relatively high daily temperatures( not lower than 15 ° C) and a long daylight hours( 14-17 hours), whereas for a typical garden a fairly short day( 10-12 hours) at low temperaturesi.e.in the fall.
Depending on the location on the horns, terminal( apical) and lower pectoral inflorescences are formed, and the development of inflorescences occurs very quickly, in 2-3 weeks, so they are fast-growing.
The first harvest of strawberries of these varieties( June-July), as a rule, is only 10-30%, autumn( August-September) - more abundant( 70-90%).However, in the middle zone, many berries of the second crop do not have time to ripen and fall under early frosts. In this regard, it is expedient to accelerate the beginning of vegetation by covering the plants in early spring( from the beginning of April) with frames with transparent film( low tunnels) - the first crop ripens 10-14 days earlier, and also with a light film in autumn to allow ripening of the maximum number of berries.
To enhance the re-formation of peduncles, it is advisable to mow the overhead part of strawberry plants immediately after harvesting the first summer harvest.
Large-fruited remontant strawberries, unlike the usual fruiting, and on whisker sockets, so it can be used for "vertical" culture. The ability to harvest on newly formed sockets( sometimes even without roots) makes it possible to create beautiful, solid vertical walls, tie a mustache onto a large mesh net or other devices.
The laying of a large number of generative organs and the formation of a daughter plant with a yield on them also determine the high demands of the repair classes for soil fertility and nursing. Plant plants better in August at a distance of 30-40 cm in a row.
In the middle band, it is advisable to cultivate the repair varieties for two, at most, three years;in the southern regions - 1-2 years.
Repair varieties are worse than normal, they tolerate winter, so it is very important to ensure rapid growth of leaves in the spring. To do this, the rows are mulched with rotted manure or peat, 10-15 cm layer. This agro-technique also contributes to the preservation of moisture in the soil, increasing yield. As a mulching material, a dark polyethylene film can also be used.
To increase the off-season, autumn harvest, all spring peduncles in May are cut off, in this case the second fruiting( in August-September) usually increases and is equal to the total yield of the 1st and 2nd fruit.
In other respects, the agrotechnics of the remontant strawberry is similar to the garden one.
