Skin fibroma is a benign skin formation consisting of mature elements of connective tissue( fibroblasts and connective tissue fibers) and located under the epidermis( the outer layer of human skin, represented by multilayer epithelium) in the thickness of the dermis( connective tissue part of the skin located under the epidermis).

    Causes of fibroid skin

The causes of skin fibrosis are unequivocally not established, but it is believed that a great role in their development is played by hereditary factors. In addition, the likelihood of fibroids increases with age.

    Skin Fibroma Symptoms

Fibroma of the skin is usually a single, clearly delimited seal or knot up to a few centimeters in diameter. Fibroma, as a rule, is covered with unchanged or slightly pigmented skin. With a large tumor size, the color of the skin above the fibroid may become reddish-cyanotic. This tumor can sometimes have a soft consistency( a rare soft fibroid) or a densely elastic consistency( dermatofibroma, or firm fibroma of the skin). In some cases, the tumor has the form of a round or oval formation, located on a pedicle or on a narrow base( fibromus on the stem). The location of fibroids can be very diverse.

The following types of skin fibrosis are distinguished:

Hard fibroma of the skin, or dermatofibroma , is usually located on a wide base, but sometimes has a leg. Dermatofibroma to the touch dense, limited mobile, painless. This tumor can dominate over the skin or have a depressed shape. Characteristic for the demaphophyte is the pathognomonic "dimple symptom", which consists in the fact that when the tumor is compressed between the index finger and the thumb, the fibroid plunges deep into the skin, leaving a withering. Hard fibroids can appear not only on the skin, but also on the mucous membranes. Dermatofibromas occur with equal frequency in both men and women. Hard fibroids are usually single, but in some patients their number can reach several tens.

Soft skin fibroid looks like a wrinkled little pouch on a small leg, not exceeding the size of the cherry bones. It has the color of ordinary skin or various shades of brown. As a rule, this kind of fibroma develops in women of mature age and obese people. The axillary cavities, folds of the skin under the mammary glands and the mammary glands, as well as the eyelids, inguinal folds and the front surface of the neck are typical for this neoplasm. With age, the amount of soft fibroids increases.

    Fibroma complications

Fibromas can be injured by clothing or a shaving blade, possibly spontaneously twisting, leading to a worsening of the blood supply to the fibroid tissue. In this case, there are pain, swelling, necrosis( necrosis), and also the possible attachment of a secondary infection.

Examination and laboratory diagnosis of skin fibroid

For the final diagnosis of the disease, it is necessary to obtain the results of a histological examination of a tumor removed during surgery, which in difficult cases differentiates fibroma from atheroma, lipomas and hygromas.

    Treatment of fibroid skin

Treatment of fibroma of the skin is only surgical. It is resorted to only when it causes a pronounced cosmetic defect or is regularly traumatized, for example, with a shaving blade, a belt, a clothing strap when placed in appropriate anatomical areas, which in some cases can lead to unfavorable development of this tumor, and alsorenewal of growth.

Surgical removal of skin fibrosis is performed under local infiltration anesthesia, usually in a clinic. This surgical intervention can be performed in several ways: traditional surgical excision with an ordinary scalpel, using a laser, a radio wave method, or electrocoagulation. The most modern and more preferred methods are currently laser and radio wave removal of fibroids, since they make it possible to perform this surgery almost bloodlessly, which is achieved by simultaneous sealing of small blood vessels in the incision. In addition, the surgical wound is immediately sterilized by the laser beam or radio wave itself, the wound surface is covered with a soft fibrin film that protects the wound from infection and prevents the development of inflammatory complications. This ensures fast and optimal healing of the postoperative wound, and in the case of small sizes of skin fibrosis - possibly without visible traces of the operation performed. This procedure takes 15-20 minutes. The low traumatic nature of this surgical intervention allows the patient to quickly return to the habitual way of life.

    Prognosis for fibroid skin

With proper and timely treatment, the prognosis is usually favorable. In 95% of cases there is a complete cure for neoplasm. After laser and radio wave removal, skin fibrosis, tumor recurrences, as a rule, do not occur.

Malignancy( malignancy) for fibroids is not typical.
