Circumcision of and other ways of caring for the penis. Should the child be circumcised? If not, how to care for the penis( behind the genitals)?A single answer does not exist.

Circumcision is the removal of a part of the skin( called the foreskin) that covers the head of the penis. The advantages of circumcision are purity and practicality. Under the skin at the head of the penis is allocated a cheese-like mass, called smegmoy. If the foreskin remains, the smegma under it is delayed. There are common bacteria and cause irritation and an easy infection. If the foreskin is removed, the smugma does not linger and infection does not occur. If circumcision is performed in a newborn, he is not threatened with psychological trauma, as happens with older children. I consider circumcision a good tool, especially if most of the boys in the neighborhood are circumcised - in which case the boy feels "like everyone else".However, there is no absolute need for this. Circumcision is usually done in the maternity hospital.

If your child is circumcised, the wound will heal within a few days. To protect the wound and the formed scab from clinging to the diaper, apply a little Vaseline or boric ointment on a piece of gauze the size of a postage stamp and gently wrap the tip of the penis. Ointment will keep the gauze in place. If the diaper touches the wound, it may appear a few drops of blood or a single spot. Do not worry about it.

Another way to care for the penis: you need to pull out the foreskin every day and wash the head of the penis. At first, it is painful for a child, because the hole in the skin is small, and it is difficult for the mother to do this procedure effectively. To me this way, both psychologically and physically, seems unsuccessful.

The third way is to leave the foreskin alone. This is the simplest way, and it is used in most of the world. Its drawback is in the small risk of infection and the likelihood that circumcision will later be required, and then it will cause psychological consequences.

Why circumcision at a later age is harmful. The question of the need for circumcision often rises later - either because of an infection, or because the child begins to engage in masturbation. In those days when the child's emotions were not given due attention, any of these reasons was considered sufficient grounds for circumcision. Parents or a doctor could say: "Probably, he is engaged in masturbation, because he feels discomfort from the infection."The trouble is that this theory puts the cart before the horse. Now we know that boys, especially between the ages of three and six, are often worried about their penis, afraid to damage it( see paragraph 515).This anxiety can induce the child to constantly touch the penis, which causes an infection. If this is the sequence of events, you will understand that the operation will only strengthen the child's fear.

The danger of psychological trauma during circumcision is especially great between the ages of one and six years, but it persists even later in life. I consider it unreasonable to have an operation when the child has been for several months, especially to prevent masturbation. The possibility of psychological trauma in a later operation of - is a reasonable reason to perform the operation right after birth.
