What is the school for?

The main lesson of the school is the ability to live in peace. Different school subjects are somehow aimed at this goal. In the old days it was believed that the school should only teach to read, write, count and help memorize some information about the world. I heard a well-known teacher tell how, on his school days, he had to memorize the definition of a preposition: "A preposition is a word that has the meaning of space, direction, time, or expresses other abstract relations that connects a noun or pronoun in an adjective or adverbial sensewith other words in the sentence ".Of course, he did not learn anything, although he memorized this definition by heart. You learn only when the studied has meaning for you. One of the goals of the school is to make the subject so interesting and real that the children want to learn and remember it.

Comprehension with books and conversations is quite abstract. Any knowledge is better comprehended in practice. Working in a school store, counting the change and keeping the accounting books, children are better at learning arithmetic for a week than in a month from a textbook with abstract numbers.

There is no sense in knowledge, if you do not know how to be happy, get along with people and do your favorite work. A good teacher tries to understand every child to help him overcome weaknesses and grow up as a harmonious person. A child who lacks self-confidence needs to be given a chance to succeed. The bully and upstart must understand how to achieve the recognition that he craves, with the help of conscientious work. A child who does not know how to acquire friends should be sociable and attractive. For someone who seems lazy, you need to help find what interests him.

If the school is limited to abridged and dry programs - read everything in the book for reading from page 17 to page 23, and then to solve the example on page 128 by the textbook of arithmetic, - it will not achieve much. For an average well-adjusted child this may be enough. But for the smart - too boring, and for the lagging behind in development - too little. A boy who hates books, such a program does not hurt to pull the pigtail sitting in front of him a girl. But such training does not help a girl who feels alone, or a boy who needs attention and friendship.
