Description. This plant is familiar to everyone, like its popular name of "doggie", entrenched behind the plant, probably due to the unusual shape of flowers resembling a muzzle with an opening mouth. Snapdragon is one of the most beloved flying stars. Strictly speaking, it is a perennial plant, but in culture it is always grown as a summer. Snapdragon is a herbaceous plant with a height of 15 to 120 cm, strongly branched or one-white. Leaves lanceolate or elongate-oval light or dark green, sometimes with anthocyanin coating. The flowers are collected in a racemose inflorescence, the size of which is related to the height of the stem and ranges from 5-7 to 50-60 cm. The color of flowers depending on the variety is white, yellow, pink, sharlakh,
maroon, dark red, almost black velvety, two- and three-color with a lot of transition tones and shades. Coloring the flowers of the lion's pharynx is not only blue and blue.

In shape they can be labiate or open - non-mesid. Flowers large, collected in spicate inflorescences. Very interesting is their corolla: it is a bizarre shape, reminiscent of the mouth of a carnivorous beast. The flower blossoms in the inflorescence, from the bottom upwards. Every 6 days two new flowers open and stay there for almost 2 weeks, and the entire plant blooms 3-3.5 months. With the timely removal of blossoming inflorescences, it blooms continuously from June to autumn. There are more than 800 varieties and hybrids of the lion's pharynx, which are divided into groups by plant height:
giant - more than 80 cm,
high - 60-80 cm,
medium - 40-60 cm,
low - 25-40 cm.
dwarfish- less than 25 cm.
There are hybrids, the height of plants which is 1-1,2 m, and the length of the inflorescence is 30-40 cm. High varieties with unusual double flowers( the Butterfly garden group) are very interesting.
Tall hybrids of the lion's pharynx with large flowers go on cutting off, low - to create flowerbeds, color spots on the lawn,

.Dwarf forms are good for low curbs, decoration of balconies and in cut form. Floral mixtures of lion's pharynx, selected by the color of flowers, most often composed for low grades, create magnificent flower bed or flower bed rugs.
Cultivation and care. The plant is cold-resistant and light-loving. It grows well on any soils, but prefers fertile air permeable, well growing on loamy and sandy loamy soils. It prefers open areas, but it grows normally in the penumbra, although it stretches and blooms less abundantly.
It is very useful to mulch the soil between plants with peat, humus, sawdust - the flowering is markedly enhanced. In hot dry weather, snapdragon requires watering, but it is harmful to waterlogge the soil. Grow lion's zev by sowing seeds on seedlings. The main difficulty in growing seedlings is that the seeds of the lion's throat are unusually small. Seeds are sown in March in boxes without being grounded, which is due to their microscopic size. The crops are covered with glass or film to create a moist microclimate. Seedlings appear 7-9 days later and grow very slowly. Seedlings dive in a month and planted in a permanent place 20-25 cm apart. For a more abundant flowering, the central shoot is plucked. Shoots do not tolerate excess moisture, especially at night. Seedlings with excess moisture during growth can die from the black leg. In the open ground seedlings are planted in the second and third decades of May at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other, depending on the variety. When plants get accustomed, they are fed with any full mineral fertilizer - 5-10 g. Per Yul water. After 10-12 days, the dressing is repeated.
Care for the lion's throat is in loosening, watering and feeding. The first fertilizing is carried out 2 weeks after planting the seedlings with nitrogen fertilizer( 4-6 g / m2).It is also recommended a one-time top dressing infusion Mullein, diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10.Seeds ripen after 2 months from the beginning of flowering.
Snapdragon is a cross-pollinated plant. If several varieties are grown and seeds need to be obtained, then individual varieties should be planted at a distance of 100-300 m from each other, so it is impossible to obtain clean-seed seeds in the garden area.
