Enlargement of lymph nodes - Causes, symptoms and treatment. MF.

Symptoms similar to inflammation of the lymph nodes:

Lymph nodes - small round or bean-shaped masses of lymphatic tissue surrounded by a capsule of connective tissue. Lymph nodes are located in many places in the lymphatic system throughout the body. Lymph nodes are filters of lymphatic fluid and storage of special cells that can catch cancer cells or bacteria traveling through the body in the lymphatic fluid. Lymph nodes are crucial for immunity and the fight against viruses, microbes and other foreign substances that enter the body.

Groups of lymph nodes are located in the neck, near the clavicle, in the armpit( axillary), and in the groin. Lymph nodes in the groin area are called inguinal lymph nodes. During physical examination, the doctor can grope( palpate) these areas to look for swollen or enlarged lymph nodes.

Swelling of the lymph nodes occurs, as a rule, as a result of local or extensive inflammation, but sometimes enlarged lymph nodes are associated with cancer. Swollen lymph nodes are called lymphadenopathy. Inflammation of the lymph nodes is called lymphadenitis.

In any acute respiratory viral or bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract, the lymph nodes of the neck may increase for a short time. Their increase can vary from barely perceptible to touch( with lentil grain or pea) to significant, visible by eye, size( with quail egg).When palpation can be felt soreness, or nodules can be completely painless. The more intensive the infectious process, the lymph nodes are bigger and more painful. It is worth paying close attention to a persistent prolonged increase in l / y, an increase in other groups of lymph nodes( occipital, axillary, inguinal) especially in children. Also, one-sided pronounced enlarged lymph nodes should be on guard becausethis can be a sign of severe infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Other glands that sometimes are noticeable when swollen: tonsils, parotid glands, salivary glands, lacrimal gland, thyroid gland.

In acute respiratory infections, there is no need to take special measures. Here the lymphatic system is, rather, an "indicator" of the severity of the infectious process. Long-existing lymph node enlargement clearly requires a doctor.

Warming of lymph nodes, for example, with compresses, is contraindicated.
