The external genitalia and vagina are prepared, as for any vaginal operation, in accordance with the rules of asepsis. Probing is contraindicated in the presence of purulent discharge in the vagina, inflammation of the cervical canal. This is a very simple surgical intervention, which, however, if the rules of asepsis are not followed or rough implementation can lead to serious complications( infection, perforation of the uterus).

Before probing, the doctor must make a vaginal examination in order to have an idea of the size and shape of the uterus, its position and its relationship with the neighboring organs and walls of the pelvis.

The vagina is opened with mirrors, the cervix is fixed with forceps and slightly pulled up to its opening. The uterine probe is inserted into the hole of the uterus very carefully, without applying force and slowly pushing it along the cervical canal. It must be ensured that the position of the probe is such that its curvature coincides with the bending of the uterus. Special caution requires holding the probe through the inner cervix of the cervix, below which there is a roller in the posterior lip of the cervical canal, and just in front of it - a slight depression. The probe can easily enter this cavity, with the roller resisting the advancing probe. The operator can mistakenly take this obstacle for the resistance of the inner throat and to overcome it try to push the probe with force. Further puncturing by the probe of the posterior wall of the cervical canal can be perceived by the operator as an overcoming of the resistance of the internal throat of the cervix. So sometimes perforate the uterus. To avoid this complication, it is necessary, after reaching the probe to the internal pharynx and stumbling upon an obstacle, to turn the end of the probe a little anteriorly and gently enter into the uterine cavity. Further, the probe is carefully advanced to the bottom of the uterus, its length is measured, at least approximately its width and the character of the inner surface are determined. After probing the uterus, the patient should lie for at least 2 hours. Do not make a sounding at the antenatal clinic or in the polyclinic.
