Irrigoscopy is an X-ray examination of the large intestine, filling it with an X-ray contrast suspension through the anus. This study is conducted for the diagnosis of tumors, malformations, diverticulosis, fistula, cicatricial narrowing and other diseases of the colon.
Contraindications for the carrying out of irrigoscopy are the patient's severe condition and perforation of the large intestine.
Irrigoscopy is performed without anesthesia. For 48-72 h before the procedure prescribe rheromomanoscopy, because the X-ray methods of research do not allow to reveal the pathology of the final department of the rectum.
Before the irrigoscopy, the patient is also trained.2-3 days before the study, a slag-free diet is prescribed - vegetables, fruits, greens, berries, legumes, black bread, flour products, carbonated drinks are excluded. Dinner is not allowed. On the day of the study you can drink boiled water, sweet tea, broth. In the afternoon on the eve of the study at 15.00 the patient takes 2 tablespoons of castor oil. In the evening on the eve of the study and on the morning of the day of the study, 1-2 purifying enemas with a volume of 1.0-1.5 liters of water are made.
Water-soluble barium sulfate is used as a radiopaque substance. It does not dissolve in the digestive juices of the gastrointestinal tract, so it is not absorbed and is excreted unchanged. By coating the intestinal wall with contrast material, a complete picture of the features of the mucous membrane of the colon appears on the screen or film. With tight filling, you can determine the shape, size, position of the organ. For this, barium sulfate is introduced through the anus with a special apparatus through a rubber tube without a hard tip. Under the radiographic control fill the entire large intestine and take pictures in different positions of the patient. After emptying the colon, another series of pictures are taken, exploring the relief of the mucosa of the large intestine. At the last stage, fluoroscopy is performed by dosing the gut filling the air.
Irrigoscopy does not cause serious complications. With the overgrowth of the intestine, there may be abdominal pain and painful urge.
