The procedure of psammotherapy is: general and local.
General is a sand bath and is carried on the entire body, except for the head, heart and stomach area.
Local is conducted on problem areas: limbs, lower back, separate joints.
Sand can be used any, river or sea, coarse( sand particles more than 0,5 mm each), medium-grained( from 0,5 to 0,25 mm) and fine-grained( from 0,25 to 0,1 mm).
The main requirements for sand are the purity and absence of stones, shells and other artificial and natural impurities.
The procedure can be carried out both outdoors in the warm season, and in enclosed spaces. In any case, the air temperature for adults must be at least 20 º C, for children - not lower than 23 ° C.
The duration of the procedure depends on the general condition of the individual, his individual characteristics and goals. For adults, it is 15-30 minutes, for children - no more than 15 minutes.
The most favorable time for psammotherapy in the open air is the second half of the day. By this time, the sun will warm the sand well( up to 60 ° C) and destroy most of the pathogenic microflora in it. To conduct it best on the shore of a clean water body: pond, river or lake.
Before starting the procedure in the sand, it is necessary to dig a horizontal pit, the size and shape corresponding to the human body.
Specialists believe that medium-sized sand grains have the best thermal conductivity.

The course of treatment is usually 12-15( sometimes up to 18-20) procedures for adults and 10-12 procedures for children. In order not to overload the body, sessions are held every other day.
Local psammotherapy for arthritis, arthrosis, myalgia, inflammation of the appendages can be carried out not only in clinics, but also at home. To do this, it is necessary to sift the sand through a sieve( and if necessary, and rinse with water), heat it in an oven or deep in an open fire and pour it into a pouch made of dense( for example, canvas or linen) fabric.
