The color and shape of the nails( white, yellow or greenish spots, growths) can be eithera consequence of diseases of the skin and nails, and with factors affecting the entire body. In approximately 50% of cases, the discoloration and shape of the nails is the result of a fungal infection that can be detected in air, dust and soil. There are many kinds of mushrooms that can affect the nails. The most common are Trichophyton( a ringworm fungus). This type of fungus tends to infect the skin and belongs to the category of dermatophytes. Pseudomonas( pseudomonas) is a type of bacteria that infects the base of the nail and can lead to a greenish nail color.
Chronic diseases can also affect the shape and color of the nails. Changes in the color of nails can be signs of diabetes or liver, kidney, heart disease, etc. That's why doctors pay special attention to the nails during a routine physical examination. Other, rare causes of changes in color and shape of the nails include "yellow nail syndrome" - a hereditary disease resulting in slowly growing, yellow nails, as a consequence of lymphedema( inflammation of the tissues due to accumulation of fluid) and pulmonary diseases. Nails can whiten if there is a separation of the nail from the nail bed - onycholysis.
The change in the color of the nails can be caused by different reasons. Among them, nicotine, liver and gallbladder problems, infectious diseases, often the nails darken from the frequent use of dark varnish without a base for varnish.
Yellowish-brown nail coloring may indicate fungal disease, long-term use of antibiotics, is considered a symptom of psoriasis, dermatosis and other diseases.
Whitening, or discoloration, of the nail can be caused by traumatic manicure or by the presence of air cavities under the fingernail. It is also observed as a result of smoking, deteriorating health( anemia, etc.).
Blackening the nail indicates a subungual hematoma. Red or black nails can be the result of a hematoma( collection of blood) under the nails as a result of injuries( including ingrown nails).
The appearance of pigment spots on the skin of the hands often results in exposure to ultraviolet rays. In the solarium or when visiting the beach should use sunscreen.
