Medicinal ointments are prepared from medicinal herbs and fatty substances. For their manufacture, both fresh and dried plants are used.

Ointments and creams can also be made from herbal oils and tinctures. The basis is used fatty substances, for example, lanolin, almond and butter, petrolatum or pork smalets, which are melted and filtered. Ointments prepared on fat and oil easily penetrate into the pores of the skin and have a deeper effect than ointments on petroleum jelly. Thickening of the ointment is achieved by the use of beeswax, which should be melted and added to the ointment.

Ointment is stored longer if the jars filled with it are filled with paraffin. Self-prepared medicinal ointments, balms and creams in the refrigerator are stored for several weeks, so they should be prepared in small quantities.
